Tackling stress, and reducing stress-related problems, is something I have been doing for a long time. Stress is one of the main reasons why I stopped doing yoga as a teenager. I don't mean that as a "I am the best yoga teacher ever!" kind of way. I was always able to deal with stressful situations. However, I never seemed to get anywhere. I just wanted to sit on a mat, have a beer, and watch TV. Then one day, I finally had enough. I quit. And now I'm doing yoga and eating healthy to help me deal with stress!
The thing I think people forget about stress is that stress is really a symptom of physical symptoms such as an overactive adrenalin/fight or flight response. If you are stressed, your body will create stress hormones. Your body's stress hormones can cause the following physical symptoms:
• Elevated stress hormones, such as adrenaline, cortisol, or epinephrine, cause your blood pressure to go up. High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. • Stress hormones can cause your muscles to contract. This can cause pain and stiffness. Your muscle tissues become less flexible and stronger, which makes you feel tired and stiff.
